On the 21st of March, South Africans commemorate Human Rights Day, a significant moment in our nation's history that pays tribute to the struggles and sacrifices made during the fight against apartheid. This date marks the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 when police opened fire on peaceful protestors, killing 69 people and injuring hundreds more. The event served as a catalyst for the anti-apartheid movement and drew international attention to the injustices of apartheid.
As we reflect on this pivotal moment, it's crucial to recognise the fundamental human right to education, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and upheld in South Africa's constitution.
